Quick answers to the most common questions about TheFlightWall.
TheFlightWall connects to your WiFi and displays live aircraft data from commercial aircraft, private jets, general aviation, helicopters, and more.
Area Tracking (Local sky): shows all aircraft in the area you choose; over your home, office or anywhere in the world you would like. Set a radius over your location by selecting the location arrow in the top left of your area tracking map, draw a precise polygon (e.g. focusing on a single runway), or combine both, up to 1,000 km² (386 mi²) in total.
Flight Tracking: follows a specific aircraft by flight number, callsign or tail number. Tracked flights show while they are active with as much or as little information as you choose in the app.
Once connected, FlightWall updates automatically in real time as long as it is connected to WIFI.

FlightWall Mini - USB-A, with an included 5V / 3.4A power brick for your country. Any USB-A adapter rated 2A or higher will also work. The cable is fixed and runs 71 inches (1.8m) from the back of the Mini to the USB plug. It connects at the bottom left of the back of the device.
FlightWall WideScreen (only available in US) - US plug, with a power supply rated 110–240V. The cable is about 4ft (1.2m) long and comes out of the bottom right side, so the flat back can sit flush against the wall.

Yes. Private jets, general aviation and helicopters all appear, as long as they're broadcasting their position (ADS-B). Some military aircraft hide their transponder data, so those won't show. As a rule of thumb, if a flight appears on a public flight-tracking site, it will appear on your FlightWall.
FlightWall Mini - use the built-in hooks on the top of the Mini to easily mount the display on the wall, or use the included desk stand to place it on a desk or shelf (although it can stand on its own without it.)
FlightWall WideScreen - designed for wall mounting. It comes with 2 L brackets that bolt to the top, or 2 eyelets, for hanging it on the wall.
FlightWall is not waterproof, and has not been tested for outdoor use. It's an electrical device and should be treated appropriately.
No. FlightWall has no HDMI or other video output, and no speaker or audio output.
FlightWall only works on 2.4 GHz WiFi. If you only have 5 GHz, contact your network provider and ask them to split off a 2.4 GHz connection (as this is available for most providers). A mobile hotspot also works great.
No, there is no Ethernet port. 2.4 GHz WiFi only.
This mainly affects eero Mesh WiFi routers. Try these steps in order:
- Test with a mobile hotspot first to confirm the device can connect.
- Disable Local DNS Caching: eero App → Settings → Network Settings → Local DNS Caching → Off
- Set custom DNS — Primary: 8.8.8.8 or 1.1.1.1 · Secondary: 8.8.4.4 or 1.0.0.1
- If you have eero Secure, whitelist theflightwall.com, cdn.theflightwall.com, and api.theflightwall.com (screenshots here). Check the FlightWall device isn't paused or blocked.
- Create a Guest Network - this usually resolves all remaining issues.

Try restarting by unplugging and replugging the device, then follow the setup process again. Sometimes the WiFi chip doesn't detect all nearby networks. If that doesn't work, enter your WiFi name manually in the app, or go into your phone's WiFi settings and join the FlightWall's network using the password shown on your device. If it doesn't show up there, please email contact@theflightwall.com explaining the issue.
No. The first-time setup has to be done in person (next to your FlightWall) using the QR code or by entering the details manually. Once you have connected your device to your home WiFi you can change all settings through the app anywhere in the world as long as your device is connected to WIFI.
Yes. Download TheFlightWall App and scan the QR code shown during setup (accessible by unplugging and replugging the device), or connect manually using the device ID and password. All connected users can view and control it from any network. One person can also control multiple FlightWall devices using that same setup method.
Yes. Once your FlightWall is on WiFi, the app walks you through the basics: naming your display, choosing where to track flights, units, date format, layout, and which aircraft types to show. You can skip any step and change everything later. To run it again at any time, tap the gear (top right) › Run setup again. Save any changes first, otherwise this option is greyed out.
Everything is working. When no flights in your area match your settings, FlightWall shows its "When the sky is quiet" screen: three dots, "No flights…" text, a clock or a blank screen, depending on your settings. Make sure your area is large enough, that you haven't applied too many filters, and that you've hit Save. For an extra test, place your pin over a busy airport and tap Save. You can choose what this screen shows under Display › Area Tracking › When the sky is quiet › Screen.
Try scanning in low light from at least 4-5 feet away. If that doesn't work, connect manually in the app using the device ID and password (accessible by unplugging and replugging the device).
Go into your phone's device settings (not the FlightWall app) and manually connect to the FlightWall network. Then return to the app. It should detect the connection and continue automatically. If you're still having trouble, email contact@theflightwall.com with a screenshot of the error message so we can best assist.
Check for characters that look alike, such as the letter O and the number 0, and try both. If it still won't connect, go into your phone's WiFi settings, forget the FlightWall network, and reconnect from scratch.
Nothing is wrong. "App Connected" means your phone has connected to your FlightWall's own setup network (the one starting with "FlightWall-") instead of your home WiFi. To fix it, go to your phone's WiFi settings and either forget the FlightWall network or turn off Auto-Join for it, then reconnect your phone to your home WiFi. You don't need to restart anything.
Stand near your FlightWall with your phone. In TheFlightWall App, select your device, tap the gear (top right) › System, and select Connect to your FlightWall. Change Wi-Fi network will then be available, and you can choose your new network from there. You'll be taken through setup again on the new network.
Your FlightWall updates its own firmware over WiFi, so there's nothing to download yourself. If you think an update hasn't come through, unplug the device for about 10 seconds and plug it back in to prompt it to check. You can see your firmware version under the gear (top right) › System. Update TheFlightWall App the usual way through the App Store or Google Play.
Make sure you tapped Save in the bar at the bottom of the screen. Nothing reaches your FlightWall until it's saved. The display picks up changes within about 10 seconds. If it doesn't, unplug it and plug it back in.
Alt — Altitude · Spd — Speed · Trk — Degrees from North · Vr — Vertical Rate (Up or Down)
Both the Mini and WideScreen display up to 5 flights at a time. If more flights match your settings, a "Too Many Flights" message appears. You can change or turn off that message (see "What is the orange Too Many Flights message?").
It means more flights in your area match your settings than the display can show at once. To change it, open your device in TheFlightWall App and go to Display › Area Tracking › Too many flights. Choose Text screen (shows "Too Many Flights" and how many flights are in your area), Indicator LED (a small orange LED in the top-right corner instead), or Off. Tap Save.
To see fewer, more relevant flights, you can also shrink your area or add a filter.
In TheFlightWall App, open your device and go to Display › Area Tracking › Anchor airports, then add your airport. You can add up to 6. Tap Save. On the Mini, anchor airports only appear with the Default layout.
This depends on your setup. If you have a view, draw a shape (Flights › Area Tracking › Add an area › Polygon) as close as possible to what you can see on a clear day. This may take some trial and error. Otherwise, set a radius around your location. You can create several radii and polygons in one configuration, as long as the combined area stays within 1,000 km² (386 mi²).
Under Flights › Area Tracking › Filters you can filter by aircraft type (Commercial, Small jets, Light aircraft, Helicopters, Other), airline (up to 10), speed, and unknown routes (show or hide flights with no published origin or destination). Altitude is set on each area: tap the area, then Altitude filter.
The app units and display units are controlled separately. To change what your FlightWall shows, open your device and go to Display › Area Tracking › Units, choose your units, and tap Save. The units in the app's own settings (the gear on the home screen) only affect what you see in the app.
Yes. When there are no flights to show, your FlightWall can display a clock. Go to Display › Area Tracking › When the sky is quiet and choose Clock. From there you can set the clock style, 24-hour time, seconds, date format, your timezone (including daylight saving), and up to 2 extra timezones. Tap Save.
Yes. After selecting your device, tap the moon (top right) to open the display schedule and turn on Sleep on a schedule. Set your Sleep Start and Wake Up times (the default is 10:00 PM–7:00 AM), and choose the same times every day or different times each day. Set Sleep Brightness to 0% to turn the screen off completely. Use the schedule rather than a smart plug or timer, because FlightWall is designed to stay powered on.
After selecting your device, tap the sun (top right). Use the Brightness slider to set the display brightness. To add a border, turn on Border light, then adjust the border's brightness. Tap Save.
You can choose 2, 3 or 5 seconds per flight under Display › Area Tracking › Display speed. This is separate from the data itself, which refreshes every 10 seconds.
Yes. Go to Flights › Flight Tracking › Track any aircraft and add a flight number, callsign or tail number. You can track up to 5 active flights anywhere in the world. A tracked flight usually appears about 15–30 minutes before takeoff. Under "While a flight is followed" you can choose whether flights are removed after landing and whether to show metrics and distance flown. These apply to all your followed flights. To only show flights you follow, turn off Local sky on the Home tab.
Yes. Go to Display › Area Tracking › Title text and choose Registration / tail number. This option needs the latest firmware on your FlightWall.
Yes. Each FlightWall is set up on its own, with its own area, filters and layout. For example, one can show traffic over your house while another tracks a family member's flight.
Yes. Tap the gear (top right) › Saved settings to save your current setup and switch between setups. Saved settings are stored on your phone, so they don't carry over to a new phone or a reinstall.
We've built relationships with a handful of data partners to provide global flight information updated every 10 seconds.
No. TheFlightWall’s core features are included in the product price, with no subscription. FlightWall Plus is an optional subscription, $10/month or $100/year, that adds extra features, starting with Plus Sync, which puts a pilot or crew member’s schedule on the wall.
